SULLIVAN — The Clearview Clippers struggled offensively all night, but made just enough shots to survive an upset bid from the Black River Pirates, winning 51-48 on the road in Lorain County League action on Tuesday.

Black River came out of the gate ready to play tonight, trading baskets through most of the first quarter, taking the lead six different times in the opening period.  Clearview was able to string together a couple of baskets late in the quarter and led 16-13 after one.

Clearview’s offense went cold.  From the start of the second quarter to midway through the third quarter, Clearview was held to eight points in a 13-minute stretch.  Black River led by as many as four in the third quarter.

Clearview found its stride in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Pirates 18-14 in the final period to erase the 1-point deficit entering the fourth quarter.

C.J. Fleming and Jordan Reed scored 10 each for the Clippers in the victory.  Chase Christensen added 9 while Zion Capers and Joseph Norris added 7 each.  Daniel Jeske led all scorers for Black River with 14 points.  Devon McLean had 12 and Gavin Ford had 11.

Clearview improves to 10-8 overall and 8-4 in the LC8 with the victory, its seventh straight.  The Clippers host Keystone for a critical LC8 showdown that will help determine the first conference champion.  After tonight’s action, Keystone and Columbia are tied for the lead in the LC8 at 9-3 in conference play.  Clearview, Firelands and Oberlin are all 8-4 in LC8 play, one game off the lead.

In Junior Varsity action, Clearview defeated Black River 46-39.
