Girls Varsity Basketball · Girls Basketball: Elyria Executes Down Stretch, Defeats Clearview in Close Game

SHEFFIELD TOWNSHIP — The Elyria Lady Pioneers and the Clearview Lady Clippers went toe to toe for 32 minutes, but the Pioneers executed better down the stretch and earned a 52-50 road win at Clearview in non-conference action.

Clearview led most of the first quarter, with senior post LeAnna Rogers scoring 8 points in the first quarter as the Clippers led 15-13 after one.  Elyria went on a run in the second quarter and built a 29-23 lead by halftime.

Elyria started quick in the third quarter, leading 32-25 early in the period, but Clearview responded.  A three-pointer from Niyanna Flowers, a bucket from Kamia Pilson and a layup from Arriana Noble tied the game back at 32 as the Clippers went on a 10-0 run, taking a 35-32 lead on a three-pointer from Olivia Romes.  Elyria regained the lead at 41-37 by the end of the quarter.

Noble was able to tie it again at 31 early in the fourth quarter as the Clippers opened the fourth quarter on a 4-0 run, but the Clippers couldn’t pull ahead.  Elyria stayed ahead but the game remained close, holding a lead most of the fourth quarter.

Clearview struggled down the stretch at the free throw line.  After going 7 for its first 7 at the line in the first half, Clearview made only 8 of their 24 free throw attempts closing out the game, and falling by two to visiting Elyria.

Toni McClinton led the Pioneers with 18 points.  Taylor Mehl had 17 for the Pioneers, 14 of which she scored in the first half.  Clearview had three scorers in double figures — Ariana Vazquez with 13, LeAnna Rogers with 12 and Kamia Pilson with 12.

Clearview drops to 4-4 overall and returns to Lorain County League play on Wednesday night with a varsity only matchup at 6 p.m., home against the Oberlin Phoenix.

The Elyria JV Lady Pioneers defeated Clearview 42-15.
