Boys Varsity Basketball · Boys Basketball: Clippers Cruise in Tournament Opener

SHEFFIELD TOWNSHIP — The 7th-seeded Clearview Clippers rolled past the 10th-seeded Padua Bruins, 89-54, in the opening round of the OHSAA Tournament on Tuesday night at Clearview.

Clearview dominated from the tip, outscoring Padua 20-10 in the first quarter and cruising from there.  Speed was the name of the game — Padua turned the ball over 6 times in the first quarter and 13 times in the first half.

Javon Todd had 16 points in the first half, while Jaylen Paschel returned to the lineup with 12 in the first half, as the Clippers built a 46-23 lead by halftime.

Padua was able to put together a quick spurt – scoring 11 points in the first three minutes of the third quarter, but a Clipper timeout stalled the Bruin momentum, and Clearview pulled away again and cruised through the fourth quarter, even instituting a running clock for a few minutes of the fourth quarter.

Javon Todd led the Clippers with 27 points, his third straight 20-plus point performance.  Jaylen Paschel finished with 18 points, while Joe Norris added 13 and Jamir Billings had 10.  Daniel Peterson had 18 and Akinlana Popoola had 15 to lead the Bruins.

Clearview goes to 17-7 overall on the season and will travel to 2nd-seeded Holy Name on Friday night at 7 p.m. for a sectional championship.  Padua finishes their season at 10-13.
