Girls Varsity Basketball · Girls Basketball: Sailors Push Past Clippers in Second Half

VERMILION — After a nearly even first half, the Vermilion Lady Sailors dominated the Clearview Clippers in the second half and cruised to a 53-31 victory in non-conference action on Monday night.

The Clippers played their best in the second quarter, where they outscored the Sailors 12-9.  The Clippers entered the quarter trailing 13-8, but rallied with three pointers by Olivia Romes and Madison Pennington and a three-point play from Ariana Vazquez.  The Clippers briefly took a 20-17 lead on Pennington’s triple, but Vermilion closed the quarter on a 5-0 run to regain the lead.  Clara Smith went coast-to-coast in the final ten seconds to send the Sailors to the locker room with a 22-20 lead.

The second half was all Vermilion.  From the point Clearview gained a 20-17 lead late in the first half, Vermilion closed the game on a 36-11 run.  The Clippers had only two field goals in the second half as they struggled at the offensive end.

Freshman Madison Pennington led the Clippers with 8 points tonight.  Ariana Vazquez and Olivia Romes added 7 each.  Vermilion had 3 players in double figures — Maddie Colahan dominated the interior and led all scorers with 16 points, while Marianna Plas and Clara Smith each had 13 points.

Clearview falls to 4-5 overall, while Vermilion improves to 4-9.  Clearview will be back home Wednesday evening to face the Brooklyn Hurricanes in a PAC Stripes Division matchup.

In the Junior Varsity contest, the Clippers trailed big early, and their rally came up short, falling to Vermilion 34-22.
