Multiple Teams · Boys Basketball: Clippers Hold Off Amherst Rally to Win Opener

AMHERST — If you left early, you may be surprised by what you see.  The Clearview Clippers built a 19-point lead early in the third quarter, then withstood an Amherst rally to defeat the Comets, 67-65, in a non-conference season opening matchup.

Defensive pressure gave the Clippers the advantage into the third quarter.  The Clippers forced 18 Amherst turnovers in the first half, and carried a 37-27 lead into the locker room.  Javon Todd scored 19 of his game-high 27 points in the first half.

Clearview opened the second half with back-to-back buckets from Josiah Hitchens, a Javon Todd three and a Jaylen Paschel to force an Amherst timeout at the 5:51 mark of the third quarter with the Clippers ahead 46-27.

Christian Pfeiffer got rolling for Amherst, scoring 14 of his team-high 21 points as the Comets outscored the Clippers 18-12 in the final 5:51 of the quarter to pull within 13 at 58-45 after three.

Amherst got much closer.  Kyle Ferguson, Khennedy Scagliozzo and Jason Monos all hit 3-point field goals in the fourth quarter.  Amherst pulled to within a single point at 64-63 with 1:54 left.  After back-and-forth exchanges, Amherst trailed by two with 7.6 seconds left in regulation.  Amherst’s last second three-point attempt missed and the Clippers escaped with the victory.

The Clippers featured three players in double figures — Javon Todd with 27, Jamir Billings with 17 and Jaylen Paschel with 10.  Josiah Hitchens also added 8.

Clearview is 1-0 on the season.  Next up, the Clippers will face Lutheran West in the Patriot Athletic Conference opener on Friday, December 7.  Freshmen begin at 4:30 p.m. with JV and Varsity to follow.

Both the freshmen and junior varsity teams fell in their openers against the Comets tonight.
