Julian Colbert had to battle throughout the District Tournament and he did just that, qualifying him for the state wrestling tournament in Division III next weekend.
Colbert, wrestling in the 170-pound weight class, was pinned by Waynedale’s Nathan Shaw in 5:03 in his opening match on Friday night.
Colbert entered Saturday with no margin for error in the consolation bracket, and he exceled. He won his consolation quarterfinal match over Newbury’s Mike McKale by a 9-8 decision. Advancing to the consolation semifinals, known as the “Blood Round”, with the consolation semifinal winners qualifying for the State Tournament, Colbert won a 16-8 major decision over Beachwood’s Taylor Balasz to advance to the state tournament. With his state berth secured, in the third place match, Colbert won a 6-5 decision over Norwayne’s Kaden Kidd.
J.D. McCardle pinned his first opponent on Friday night, Waterloo’s Spencer Schmucker in 2:52, to earn his 45th pin on the season. In the quarterfinals, eventual district champion Derek Elrod from Ashtabula St. John won an 8-3 decision over J.D., dropping him into the consolation bracket.
J.D. defeated Dalton’s Nathan Basinger 2-0 in his first consolation match to advance to the consolation quarterfinals. In the consolation quarterfinal, VASJ’s Pat Sheridan pinned J.D. in 4:51 to end J.D.’s season and his stellar career in the Clipper wrestling program.
The Clippers placed 30th of 53 teams with 20 team points.
